Sanskar

Jatakarma

The welcome of a newborn, just after birth.

When At birth, as the family and the hospital allow.

Jatakarma is the child's first welcome: a father's sankalp, a touch of honey and ghee, and mantra, as signs that life should stay sweet and safe. Birth now often happens in hospital, so a short, quiet form is the practical one.

The health of mother and child comes first. The rite follows when both are steady. Hurry and display are not its meaning.

This is a general introduction. Sequence, materials, and timing change with family, region, and shakha. Your priest and your own custom have the last word.
